Continuing Care Workforce Working Group
Continuing Care Workforce Working Group
The CCWWG (Continuing Care Workforce Working Group) is a task group that was established in 2000 in response to the provincial strategic plan for Healthy Aging: New Directions for Care. This is a multi-stakeholder group consisting of representatives of all regional health authorities, the Alberta Long Term Care Association, Alberta Home Care and Support Association and the Ministries of Learning, and Health and Wellness.
This group is overseeing and directing five major initiatives:
A Prototype Provincial Curriculum for Health Care Aides: The curriculum will describe the knowledge, learning activities and provide the instructional methods which will facilitate support attainment of specific competencies needed to fulfill their job requirements as specified in the Health Support Workers Competency Profile (November 2001). This curriculum was piloted at Red Deer College in January 2004. Changes were made based on feedback from this program, and the curriculum has been now finalized. Information sessions for employers and educators are being held in February and March 2005.
A Health Care Aide Awareness and Promotion Strategy: The goal is to develop and implement a marketing plan to help recruit support workers for the continuing care sector. A "Request for Proposal" document is currently being prepared to use in screening for an appropriate media consultant.
A Geriatric In-Service Mentoring Program: This is a geriatric training program for health professionals including physicians, nurses and other professionals. Proposals for the roll out of this education are currently being considered.
Specification of the potential roles of Nurses Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists in the Provision of Services to seniors.
Province-wide, in-service training program for support workers on the care implications for Alzheimer's and Dementia. This program was rolled out in early 2004 using a "Train the Trainer model" with a goal to reach 3000 front line workers by March 31, 2005. Training of these front line workers in currently in progress.
