Health Care Aides Skill Development Initiative Progress Report :
Progress of the HCA Skills Initiative Steering Committee:
Over the past 10 months, the steering committee has completed work on several components of
the initiative:
1. Identification of the basic modules of the curriculum required for HCA competency to work
in any living stream of continuing care
2. Establishment of a condensed curriculum for inservice education
3. Establishment of a consistent competency assessment tool and process based on the
condensed curriculum
4. Development of guidelines to determine which non-articulated certificate program graduates
in the province would be recognized in the system as certified / competent.
5. Establishment of a standardized process for HCAs education history information to be
shared between employers to have their competencies and learning plans recognized
6. Developing a framework for a future HCA registry system
7. Identification of the potential labor relation consequences of the HCA Skills Initiative
Further areas of work of the Steering Committee:
1) Identify an ongoing review process and maintenance strategy to ensure a competent
workforce of HCAs
2) Complete the HCA registry database
